Abstract
The main problem of this thesis is “is there any significant difference in students’ speaking achievement between those who are taught by using card sort method and those who are taught by using grammar translation method (GTM) to Tenth Grade students at Madrasah Aliyah Darussalam Bumi Agung Lempuing OKI South Sumatera”?. The population of the study were 214 students from 5 classes. The sample were 82 students that were randomly taken from the tenth grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Darussalam Bumi Agung Lempuing OKI in the academic year of 2011/2012. An experimental method was used in this study, the especially design is quasy experimental design and the matching only pretest-post-test control group design . The data were obtained by means of test. Based on the results of the data analysis, there was finding of the research that calculated by using Matched t-test which the value of t-obtained was 5.184 at the significant level p<0.05 for two tailed test and degree of freedom was 21, t-table was 2.08. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than t-table, so that the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be stated that There was a significant difference in students’ speaking achievement between the tenth grade students at Madrasah Aliyah Darussalam Bumi Agung Lempuing OKI South Sumatera who are taught by using card sort method and those who are taught by using grammar translation method (GTM). However, there were still some students who were poor in speaking. Therefore, the result of this study is expected to contribute something for the development of the process of English teaching and learning especially for the teaching of speaking. Finally, it is expected that the teachers of English put an emphasis on the teaching of speaking in addition to the teaching of writing and grammar/ structure.
