Abstract

The main objectives of the study was to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of English as a medium of instruction at SMP Paramount Palembang. The participants of the study were eighth grade students of SMP Paramount Palembang with the total number of 12 students in the academic year of 2018-2019 by using purposeful sampling technique. In this study, I used a qualitative case study, which used observations and interview for collecting the data. Meanwhile, in order to find out thestudents’ perception on the use of English as a medium of instruction, the data gained from observation and interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings showed that there were three benefits in using English as a medium of instruction as followed: 1) students’ feel that their interest in learning the material improved, and 2)students feel that their self confidence in speaking English inside and outside the classroom improved. In addition, the findings also found that there were three difficulties in using English as a medium of instruction as followed: 1) students feel difficult in comprehending the meaning of the materials in English, and 2) students feel difficult in understanding examination questions.
