Abstract

The purposes of this study were to identify the strategies used by the English teacher and to find out the problems faced by the English teacher in using those strategies in teaching speaking skills for young learners, in this case, the fifth grade students of SDIT Azizah Palembang. This study used qualitative research and employed case study as the research methodology. The participants of this study were the fifth grade English teacher and students of SDIT Azizah Palembang. In collecting data, the researcher used observations and interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results of this study revealed that the strategies used by the fifth grade English teacher in teaching speaking were: 1) brainstorming; 2) role playing; 3) mind mapping; 4) picture describing. The fifth grade English teacher were also faced problems in using those strategies in teaching speaking skills when the students were: 1) inhibited to speak in front of others; 2) hardly participated in speaking activities.
