Abstract

WhatsApp is one of the online learning platforms used for reading activities during COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted to find out the students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in reading activities at SMP YAPI Air Batu in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study was employed by using qualitative research design with a case study method. The participants of this study were the eighth grade students of SMP YAPI Air Batu which consisted of six students by employing purposeful sampling with maximal variation sampling. The data were collected by using semi-structured interview through open-ended questions. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The finding of this study revealed that there were four perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in reading activities, as follows: (a) students’ faster way of sharing knowledge, (b) higher students’ participations, (c) problems of internet connection, and (d) redundant message within the group.
