Abstract
The purpose of this study was to discover the difficulties encountered by the lecturer when teaching pre-service teachers how to write essays and the ways to solve it. A case study was used and perposeful sampling utilized. An interview was used to find out the difficulties and the solutions. The difficulties were : 1) a lack of a teaching aid; 2) feeling overloaded; 3) a lack of grammar competence; 4) an insufficient time; 5) a difficulty in explaining the background; 6) the lecturer's trouble in detecting whose side the students were on; and 7) a difficulty in explaining how to present writers' own arguments. The soultions were also mentioned : 1) the usage of internet data; 2) Organizing pre-service teachers into groups; 3) Using technology to eliminate grammatical errors; 4) Reviewing during non-teaching hours; 5) delivering PowerPoint presentations; 6) Explaining, grouping, and presenting with interesting materials; 7) motivating. By knowing the difficulties and the solutions, the lecturer could prepare herself in case she encounters the aforementioned challenges again and figure out more appropriate solutions.
