Abstract

This is a qualitative research with a case study research design which aimed at investigating difficulties encountered by the students in reading comprehension at MAN 1 Muara Enim. The researcher selected nine students who met the criteria as a research participant by using purposeful sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used an interview as an instrument. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The result showed that the students faced some difficulties in reading comprehension, such as lack of vocabulary knowledge, low level of grammar mastery, unfamiliar with the topic of the text, unable to use reading strategy for effective reading, and too long reading text. The researcher suggests the teachers to encourage students to read English texts until they develop a reading habit, which makes students able to improve their reading strategies and also expand their vocabulary.
