Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the plagiarism phenomenon in thesis proposal writing encountered by EFL students of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang through their perceptions. The research methodology applied was a case study by using a qualitative approach. The data of this study was collected through interview with the purposeful sampling. The interview was conducted to five ninth semester EFL students. The criterion of participants was selected from the proposal writing which plagiarism result detected more than 30 percents as the limit of maximum percentage plagiarism allowed in that major. The thematic analysis was carried out to analyze the data. The writer found that there were some perceptions revealed in this study. First, most of the participants were having the same perceptions about plagiarism in general and in academic writing context. Second, most of the participants were having various perceptions about the plagiarism forms knowledge. They were confused and doubt to mention it. Third, most of the participants had different perceptions to state the factors of plagiarism in their work. As mentioned in the sudents’ interview, they were lack of knowledge to do the proper paraphrasing and lack of awareness about plagiarism, laziness, getting stuck to develop the writing ideas, easy to get the data being plagiarized on the internet. Fifth through their experiences, most of the participants were aware that plagiarism occurred in their proposal writing and the rest of them were unaware about the plagarism issue in their work.
