Abstract

Teaching English to deaf students had challenges for the teacher instead of teaching English to regular students. This research aimed to find out the challenges in teaching English to deaf students at SLB B Negeri Pembina Palembang. This study was designed by using qualitative research with a case study approach. There were two English teachers and the principal of SLB B Negeri Pembina Palembang who participated in this research, which was selected by using purposeful sampling. To collect the data, the researcher used interview protocol by conducting face to face interview. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data obtained during the interview. The finding revealed that there were thirteen challenges that teachers faced in the teaching English to deaf student, there were teachers’ challenges in adapting material and media, teachers’ challenges in finding appropriate material and media, professional teachers, students’ mistakes in understanding words, teachers’ challenges in getting attention without calling out their names, students’ limited vocabularies, students’ lack of background knowledge, students’ difficulties in differentiating similar words, repetition in delivering material, limited time in teaching, instruction process, instruction process and equipment, and school limited facilities.
