Abstract

This study was intended to examine students’ perceptions of WhatsApp for reading activities at SMP Negeri 11 Palembang. This study used qualitative research with a case study to find and investigate students’ perceptions of WhatsApp for reading activities. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 11 Palembang with six students as participant by using purposeful sampling. In collecting data, the researcher used interviews through openended questions. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The results of this study showed that there were perceptions about the implementation of WhatsApp for reading activities, as follows: (1) WhatsApp helped students toincrease their vocabularies, (2) The exchange of information was faster and easier between teachers and students, (3) WhatsApp promoted good interaction between teachers and students, (4) WhatsApp promoted easily-monitored class, (5) WhatsApp allowed the students to study anywhere and anytime, (6) Not all students became active users of WhatsApp, (7) Miscommunication often occurred in receiving information, (8) Not all students were active in discussion activities on WhatsApp group, and (9) Network disruptions often occurred on the use of WhatsApp social media.
