Abstract
Telegram is a tool used by the teachers in teaching English. In this case it is for teaching speaking. The purpose of this study was to find out the teachers’ problems in teaching speaking by using Telegram and teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking by using telegram. Participants in this study were 2 teachers at SMAN 1 Pangkalan Lampam OKI taken by using purposeful sampling. This research was a case study design. Interviews were used to collect the research data. Interviews were conducted with 2 teachers at SMAN 1 Pangkalan Lampam OKI. Data obtained from interviews were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings of this research revealed that there were teachers’ problems in teaching speaking by using Telegram, as follows: (1) Low internet speed, (2) Less motivated, (3) Reluctant to speak, and (4) Behind hand assignment submission. Then, the strategies to overcome the problem of teachers in teaching speaking using telegram, as follows: (1) Using the easy language in the teaching activities, (2) Giving some instructions or training in discussion skills, (3) Keeping the students to speak the target language, and (4) Providing additional time for students to collect assignments.
