Abstract

The aim of the study was to find out English teacher’s perception on the use of authentic assessment on English subject. This study used a qualitative approach. One of the qualitative research designs applied in this study was case study design. For data collection, the researcher used interview as an instrument. The researcher chose one of the teachers of English at MA Bahrul Ulum Tanjung Lago, Banyuasin since the teacher applied authentic assessment. This research finding consisted of seven themes, as follows three advantages of authentic assessment there are Authentic assessment will be able to find out where the strengths and weaknesses of student, authentic assessment will be able to describe a student in learning in the form of achievement or learning progress, authentic assessment improve the teaching and learning process. And four disadvantages of authentic assessment there are authentic assessment cost more than standard tests, authentic assessments may be less reliable and valid than other forms of assessment, for teacher who use authentic assessment in the classroom lesson are further develop education and professionalism, authentic assessment cannot be used according to standards for policy makers because authentic assessment cannot display old trends like standardized tests.
