Abstract

The title of this research was “The Challenges in Applying Student-Centered Approach in Teaching English: Case Study at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang”. This study aimed to find out the challenges encountered by English teachers in applying student-centered approach in teaching English at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang. The design of this study was qualitative research in the form of a case study design. This study was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang with one of English teachers to the answer of research problem in this study. In collecting data, the researcher used one-on-one interviews through open-ended questions. The result of this study showed that the challenges encountered by English teachers in applying the student-centered approach in teaching English at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Palembang consisted of (1) students’ time to communicate, (2) developing the students’ motivation, (3) activating the students’ knowledge background, (4) enhancing the students’ critical thinking, (5) lack of materials, (6) facilitating students in learning, (7) the lack of teachers’ knowledge, (8) the lack of the teacher’s preparation for class activities.
