Abstract

The purpose of this research study were to find how were the students’ Emotional Intelligence and their English Achievement, the correlation between students’ Emotional Intelligence and their English Achievement, and the influence of students’ Emotional Intelligence to their English Achievement at SMA Negeri 22 Palembang. A questionnaire of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and students’ English score in the previous semester were used as the research instruments. Data collected and analyzed by using the descriptive statistic, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, and regression analysis. The result showed that the most students’ Emotional intelligence and their English Achievement level were in the medium level. Then, there was a moderate positive correlation between the students’ emotional intelligence and their English achievement. The result also indicated a significant influence between the two variables, which meant the better students’ emotional intelligence, the better score they got in their English achievement. It is recommended that the teacher know and understand the relationship between students’ emotional intelligence and students’ academic achievement in English, in order to help the educators/teachers know how is the two variables correlated each other.
