Abstract

WhatsApp is one of online learning media platform that has been used as a learning medium during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to determine the teacher’s perceptions of using WhatsApp as an online platform in blended learning in teaching reading at MTs Nurul Iman Modong PALI. The participant in this study was one English teacher which was chosen by using a total sampling tech-nique. Qualitative with a case study design was used. Data obtained from inter-view were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results of this study indicated that there are several perceptions regarding the use of blended learning, advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp as an online platform in blended learning in teach-ing reading, they are: (a) Blended learning was an effective learning method during pandemic, (b) Using WhatsApp as an online learning platform in blended learning is appropriate for teaching reading, (c) WhatsApp supported sharing information, (d) WhatsApp promote good interaction between teacher and students, (e) WhatsApp promoted controlled classes, (f) WhatsApp can make learning schedule anywhere and anytime, (g) WhatsApp helped students’ reading improvement, (h) WhatsApp made students less active to participate at the lesson, (i) Difficulties on students’ attention on WhatsApp, (j) Miscommunication often occurred in receiv-ing information on WhatsApp, and (k) Network disturbance often occurred when teaching and learning on WhatsApp. Keywords: Blended learning, Online learning platform, Teacher’s perceptions, Teaching reading, WhatsApp
