Abstract
The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not: (1) there was significant correlation between students’ personality traits and English proficiency (2) students’ personality traits contributed to their English proficiency. The population (N=381) of the study was the eleventh grade students of UPT SMK Negeri 02 Ogan Ilir academic year 2021/2022. Simple random sampling was used in which 30 students was taken as sample. The data were collected by using ready-made IPIP Big-five questionnaire and English proficiency. The results of the questionnaire showed 18 (60%) students are included a conscientiousness type, 4 (14%) agreeableness, 2 (7%) emotional stability, 3 (10%) openness, 1 (3%) extraversion-openness, 1 (3%) agreeableness-conscientiousness, and 1 (3%) agreeableness-openness. The results of the students’ English proficiency showed 25 (83%) students are included as progressing and 5 (18%) students are included as emerging. The analysis indicated that there was no significant correlation between each type personality traits and English proficiency (N=30) all the p-significances were higher than .05. The correlation coefficient was .177 for extraversion, the correlation coefficient was .225 for agreeableness, the correlation coefficient was .352 for conscientiousness, the correlation coefficient was .448 for emotional stability, and the correlation coefficient was -.070 for openness. Therefore, further problem using the regression analysis was not analyzed.
