Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language to young learners needs special approach since young learners have special characteristics. Furthermore, teacher needs to use appropriate learning strategies so the students are engaged and motivated in teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study was to find out (1) English teacher’s strategies in promoting young learner participation. (2) The benefits of young learners’ participation for English teacher. Participant in this study was one teacher of English at SD Patra Mandiri 2 Palembang taken by using total sampling. This study used case study design. Interviews were used to collect the research data. Data obtained from interviews were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings of this study showed that (1) there were nine strategies in promoting young learner participation, they are: demonstration, chorall drill, look & say, pictorial illustration, verbal illustration, association, questioning, narration and read & say. Besides, (2) young learners’ participation has benefits for English teacher, they are: getting students’feedback and increasing students’interest.
