Abstract

The photodegradation method was one way to tackle methylene blue pollution by utilizing a light source and a catalyst. This study aims to reduce methylene blue pollution using the photodegradation method with CaO/C nanocatalysts. The CaO/C nanocatalysts were synthesized from CaO extracted from conch shells and carbon from dogfruit’ shell. The materials were characterized using FT- IR spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM. Photodegradation was performed using two light sources: UV and sunlight. The results showed that the photodegradation of methylene blue with CaO/C nanocatalysts was more efficient with sunlight. The degradation percentage of methylene blue with sunlight reached 30% compared to only 6.8% with UV light in 60 minutes at a concentration of 25 ppm.
