Abstract

This study is aimed to describe students' anxiety in learning speak at SMPN 40 Palembang. This study applied case study design with a qualitative approach. For preliminary study, Public Speaking Anxiety Scale (PSCAS) questionnaire was applied to find out the students’ anxiety level. Then five students were chosen as the participants of this study by using maximum variation sampling. Then, interview based on Horwitz et al (2011) was applied to find out the factors that cause the students’ anxiety in learning speaking. The study found three factors that cause students anxiety in learning speaking, including shyness and lack of confidence, fear of making mistake, and fear of negative evaluation. The students were shy to speak because they are not fluent in English. The students were afraid of making mistake if they hadn’t prepare themselves and memorize the materials. The were afraid of getting negative reaction from their teacher and classmates when they made mistakes in pronunciation. The study suggests that teachers should provide suggestions, facilities, and various effective ways of learning in the classroom, so that speaking activities are not boring by asking students to make small group discussions, such as with partners to make it easier to carry out conversation and increase vocabulary training to improve skills.
