Abstract

ABSTRACT This study insvestigated the correlation between reading habit and writing ability, and explored the influence of reading habit and writing ability at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. A total of the population were 349 students, and the sample were 88 students from 3 classes. There were two instruments in collecting the data questionnaire and test. Questionnaire for reading habit, to measure students’ reading habit. Test for writing ability, to measure students writing ability in writing narrative text. The descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data in this study. The findings of this study showed that there was no significant correlation (r = 0.035) was lower than r-table (.195). Then, the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was .745 was higher than 0.05. Thus, that there was no significant correlation between the students’ reading habit and their ability in writing narrative text at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang.
