Abstract

ABSTRAC This study raises the theme of discussion about the ritual tradition of burning incense in praying for the souls in Sugih Waras Village, Rambang District, Muara Enim Regency. The background of this thesis is that the people of Sugih Waras say that the burning of incense is intended to summon the spirits of the dead. Calling for the spirit here is not interpreted as calling the spirit to come to the house, but aims to pray for the spirit and participate in confirming the prayer to God. The formulation of the problem in this thesis is the implementation process, meaning and impact of the incense burning ritual. And the purpose of this research is to answer problems regarding the implementation process, meaning and impact of the incense burning ritual in Sugih Waras Village. The research method in this thesis is to use field research using qualitative data types. This study uses primary and secondary data sources. Using the primary data collection method, in this study, traditional religious leaders and the community follow the continuity of the incense burning ritual. The secondary data sources are in the form of books, scientific works, research results, and literature related to the incense burning ritual. From the results of this study, it was concluded that the incense burning process had ingredients that had to be prepared such as belangir, slaughtering two ulu-sulang goats, slaughtering buffalo, pulpit, alms incense, takir (anyut-anyut) and climbing areca nut. As well as having a meaning as an expression of gratitude to avoid rejection and this tradition has a positive impact that can be taken by the community to preserve culture from generation to generation and be able to strengthen friendship relations. Meanwhile, the negative impact is that people should not abandon the incense burning ritual which has existed since the time of the ancestors. Keywords: Belangir, Frankincense, Spirit
