Abstract
Problems that live in society are the same as contextual interpretation, because contextual interpretation itself provides an understanding of the methodology of interpretation by looking at situations and conditions that occur in the reality of life and gives birth to new principles and principles that can be used in good interpretation in society, religious moderation, nation and state. However, we still pay attention to classical understanding since the verses were revealed. Indonesia has an organization that is worldwide and the largest in Indonesia, which once played a role as a political party in Indonesia, namely the Nahdatul Ulama (NU) organization. Nahdatul Ulama is very useful in Indonesia, because Nahdatul Ulama can organize pious charitable activities to improve the quality of life. such as providing assistance to Islamic boarding schools, schools, hospitals and universities. In this research, the library research method is used, where the data source is taken from the library. The results of this research are that the contextual interpretation model of Nahdatul Ulama figures regarding wasathiyah Islam does not deviate and is not far from Islam rahmatan lil alamin because it requires being moderate (wasathiyah), it must always prioritize the principles of wasathiyah Islam. Middle (tawasuth), tolerance (tasamuh), balance (tawazun), justice (i'tidal), simplicity (iqtishad). And regarding its relevance to religious traditions in Indonesia, that's okay and will still be preserved as long as it doesn't deviate from Islamic religious law. It was also found that Nahdatul Ulama views wasathiyah Islam based on verse al-Baqarah 143 in order to realize the concept of wasathan ummatan.
