Abstract

Nowadays, the use of criticism in song lyrics is often used by domestic musicians and musicians abroad. In an effort to respond to issues that are not in line with the public's wishes with the aim of improving what has happened to be better and in line with the public's wishes. Iwan Fals, as one of the legendary musicians in Indonesia, often uses criticism and protests packaged with music and melodies arranged in such a way. This research is included in the type of qualitative research using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis which is relevant to be used as a data analysis technique that reveals the meaning and political messages conveyed by musician Iwan Fals through the lyrics of his songs. The data source in this research is the lyrics written by Iwan Fals in his work entitled Bongkar and Asik Ngga Asik on various digital platforms. This research uses primary data collection techniques, namely the Song Bongkar on the YouTube and Spotify platforms and the Song Asik Ngga Asik on the YouTube and Spotify platforms as well as secondary data obtained through literacy or literature and online media related to this research. The results of the research in this thesis are variations in the means of conveying criticism of things that are not in accordance with the public's wishes, which can be through music and other arts which can be accessed on all available digital platforms. The context of criticism in Iwan Fals' musical works can be attached to his work, which makes people braver in expressing their rights and paying more attention to the phenomena that occur around them.
