Abstract

Bacteriophages are a type of virus that can infect and reproduce in certain bacterial cells with the aim of lysing their host bacterial cells which have high specificity. Bacteriophages can be used to kill pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli. The use of phages in various applications requires various tests to ensure the stability of phage activity. This research aims to determine whether bacteriophage SK 1-1+2 can be used as a biocontrol for the growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in soy milk and to determine the effectiveness of bacteriophage SK 1-1+2 in lysing Escherichia coli O157:H7. This research uses quantitative descriptive experimental methods. Research shows that the bacteriophage SK 1-1+2 is active in lysing its host bacteria Escerichia coli O157:H7. In the application test on soy milk, it was found that the SK 1-1+2 bacteriophage was able to lyse Escherichia coli O157:H7. This proves that the SK 1-1+2 bacteriophage can be used as a biocontrol and the bacteriophage is safe for consumption. Keywords: Escherichia coli, lytic phages, soy milk
