Abstract

People with intellectual disabilities have various classifications ranging from mild to severe conditions. Basically, children with intellectual disabilities have the urge to connect with others just like other normal children. However, children with intellectual disabilities have difficulty in carrying out social interaction. Intellectual limitations that cause children with intellectual disabilities to have difficulty learning the norms of society. The inability to learn societal norms makes children with intellectual disabilities have difficulty making social adjustments. This case makes people with intellectual disabilities always need others in carrying out various activities, especially those that require high skills. One of them is help from parents, because parents play the most important role as the closest people and have a great responsibility in taking care of, fostering, and shaping their behavior. The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze how the picture of parental support in increasing the independence of children with moderate disabilities in the Local SLB – C1 Foundation for the Development of Children with Disabilities (YPAC) Palembang City in 2023. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach (qualitative research). In this study, researchers used data mining techniques by conducting interviews, observations, and documentation methods. The subjects studied were parents who had children with moderate intellectual disabilities, and studied at the local SLB – C1 Yayasan Pembinaan Anak Disabilities Kota Palembang. The results of the study explained that there are four types of parental support or four dimensions of social support, including instrumental, informational, reward and emotional support.
