Abstract

This study deals with the lexical density especially the content words and function words of English reading texts in the textbook for junior high school. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density especially the content words and function words in the reading texts of English on Sky (VIII) textbook and also to find out which text that belongs to the high lexical density. This study was conducted by content analysis with qualitative approach. The data of this research were the English reading texts of English on Sky (VIII) textbook for junior high school published by Erlangga. The result of the analysis showed that, it is found that in “English on Sky VIII” textbook contained different percentages lexical density in each text, then there are nine reading texts is quite category, three reading texts under low category, and two reading text have high lexical, it two reading texts have high lexical density category, there are “Camping” text 60.50 % and “Thomas Alva Edison” text with 67.68 %. It is recommended that this study can be used as comparison for another study which is related to the lexical density. Then this book is recommended because this book is appropriate in term of lexical density.
