Abstract
This research aimed to describe the correlation between students’ mastery in collocation and writing achievement. The method which was used in this research was correlational research. The population of the research was the undergraduate students of English education study program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang in academic year 2017/2018. The population are 492 students from sixth semesters in this research. The sample was taken by using convenient sampling technique which consist of 37 students. There are two variables in this research. The first one was students’ mastery in collocation (variable X) and the second one was students’ writing achievement (variable Y). The students’ mastery in collocation score was taken from the collmatch test whereas the student’ writing achievement was taken from essay test. Based on the data analysis, the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was .631. It means that p (.597) was higher than (0.05). It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. From the research finding, it can be concluded that there was no significant correlation between students’ mastery in collocation and writing achievement. These results indicate that collocations are not the influential element in writing skills regardless of the reader’s level for writing ability.
