Abstract

The aims of this study were to examine the student teachers’ grammatical awareness and their perception towards grammatical awareness of English Education Study Program student teachers at State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang. The sample of this study were 133 student teachers in quantitative method and 12 student teachers in qualitative method, which taken from all class of fifth semester of English Education Study Program student teachers at State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang. The data were collected through grammatical awareness test and semi-structured interviewed with student teachers. The quantitative result showed that student teachers contributed four types of grammatical awareness proposed by Andrews (1999). In metalanguage recognition type, the student teachers got a mean score was 21. 35. Metalanguage production type, the student teachers got a mean score was 6.02. Then, identification and grammatical error correction type, the student teachers got a mean score was 8.26. While, explain grammatical rules type, the student teachers a mean score was 5.66. Thus, metalanguage recognition was proven to be the easiest part for the student teachers followed by error correction and metalanguage production, while rules and explanations proved to be the most difficult part for the student teachers. Additionally, this study also revealed that student teachers’ grammatical awareness as moderate level. It proved by the majority of the participants (72%) was in the range score 31–50. Moreover, the qualitative finding showed that (1) student teachers claimed that metalanguage production type as the easiest, while rule and explanation type as the difficult, and (2) student teachers’ problems in grammar because they felt do not understand about the meaning and use of the grammar rules such as tenses as a major factor for their lack.
