Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the causes of students’ reticence and to find out the lecturer’s strategies to cope students reticence in EFL classroom of the State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang. Case study was used as research methodology in this study. The participants of this study were EFL students of State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang which consist of 10 students. Purposive sampling was used in this study. In collecting the data, observation and interview were administrated to participants to explore the causes of students’ reticence and lecturer’s strategies to cope with the students’ reticence. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data from interview and observation. The results showed that there were five causes of the students reticence. The causes were: 1) lack of language competence, 2) anxiety, 3) lack of motivation, 4) mood and 5) classroom atmosphere. The results showed that there were five strategies that were used by the lecturer. The strategies were: 1) teaching strategies, 2) learning enviroment, 3) instructional material, 4) classroom management, 5) instructional media. To improve their speaking skills, the students reported that they would like to have peers who could appreciate and did not make fun of them when they made mistakes. The students also hoped that lecturers could pay more attention to the students and give some interesting tasks to improve their speaking ability in speaking class. Finally, some suggestions are proposed to help students to be more active and willing to communicate.
