Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the test items quality of English semester test at the second semester of the second grade students of SMPN 01 Tanjung Batu in the academic year 2017/2018. The researcher analyzed the multiple-choice items with total 40 items which focused on (1) face validity, (2) content validity, (3) construct validity, (4) reliability, (5) practicality, (6) index of difficulty, and (7) discrimination power. The research method used was descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this study were24 students from the second grade students of SMPN 01 Tanjung Batu. Documentation and interview were used to collect the data. The findings showed that (1)in the face validity there were 19 items made with incorrect grammar, 2 items with incorrect spelling and 36 items made with very inappropriate construction and format, (2)in the content validity only 13 from 40 items which represented the English syllabus, (3) in construct validity almost the items represented the nine aspects of construct validity, (4) the reliability was categorized into good since the result was above 0.70, (5)in the practicality (the cost, time allocation, administration and scoring system) was very good, (6) in index of difficult there were only 16 items can be used and the rest should be revised, and (7) in discrimination power almost of items cannot discriminate between the students in high and low level. Furthermore, there were three factors that caused the students difficulty in answering the test. The first was because there were incorrect words typed and wrong structured sentences in the question, there were question items in English semester test which were never taught by teacher and never learned by the students, and the last was because they felt disturbed when there was his or her friend asking the answer.
