Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the factors affecting undergraduate students’ difficulties in writing thesis at English Education Study Program of Tarbiyah Faculty at State Islamic University Raden Fatah Palemebang. In this study, the researcher used mixed-method study. The subject of this study were 30 students academic year 2013/2014 as the sample and selected by using purposive sampling method. In collecting the data, the writer applied two instruments, questionnaire and interview. The data were collected by using questionnaire were 20 item designed on five point scale to know students’ perception of difficulty with aspects in writing thesis and interview was used to dicover the factors affecting students’ difficulty in writing their thesis in english. Descriptive quantitative design was used in this research. The results of the study showed that the students tended to perceive thesis writing to be difficult. The data showed significant findings there were (47,6%) who faced difficulties in structure/content-related component. Then, there were (52,4%) students who faced difficulties in language related components. In short, the students expressed a higher perception of difficulty in writing thesis was language-related component rather than Structure/content-related component. The interview result showed that the first factors was cognitive problems. They got difficulty in expressing their ideas into their thesis. The second was lingustics problems. They got difficulty to make correct sentences because they had lack of vocabuary and grammar. The third was psychological problems. It showed students were worried to make mistakes in writing thesis. The last was lack of material resources. There was limited number of printed and online resources.
