Abstract
Reticence is one of classroom phenomenon when people avoid communication because they believe they will lose more by talking than by remaining silent. This study was done to find out (1) the causes of students’ reticence in Undergraduate EFL classroom of Muhammadiyah University of Palembang, and (2) the lecturer’s strategies to cope with the students’ reticence in Undergraduate EFL classroom of Muhammadiyah University of Palembang. The participants in this study were 6 students and 1 lecturer. This study employed qualitative method. In order to collect the data classroom observation and interview were used. These intruments were used to find the causes of reticence and strategies to cope with reticence. From this study, it was found out that the causes of reticence in undergraduate EFL classroom were anxiety, knowledge of communication topics, personality and lecturer influence. Moreover, from this study, we also found that the lecturer’s strategies to cope with students’ reticence in Muhammadiyah University Palembang were giving encouragement and improving teaching strategies
