Abstract

The main problem of the study is “is there any significant difference on students’ vocabulary between those who are taught by using scavenger hunts and those who are not. An experimental design was used in this study, especially design quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test non-equivalent group designs. The populations of the study were 104 students from 3 classes. The samples were 64 students that were conveniently taken from the third grade students of SD Negeri 4 Palembang in the academic year 2013/2014. Based on the result of the data analysis, there was finding of the research that calculated by using independent t-test which the t-obtained was -7.824. At a significant level 0.05 for the two tailed testing with degree of freedom df= 62 the table was 2.000, t-test showed that t-obtained higher than t-table as a critical value, the nul hypothesis (Ho) in post-test was rejected and the research hypothesis (Ha) in pre-test group was accepted. It means that there was significant difference post-test on students’ vocabulary achievement taught scavenger hunts of SD Negeri 4 Palembang. Based on the data analysis, the findings found that there was significant difference between control and experimental group. The result of study indicated that scavenger hunts supported effective comprehensive vocabulary. Finally, it is expected to contribute something for the development of the process of English language teaching and learning, especially for teaching vocabulary to elementary level.
