Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the types of communication strategies used by eleventh grade students in the process of teaching and learning. The participants of this study were two eleventh grade students at SMK N I Lalan. In this study, the writer applied a qualitative study with case study design, which employ interview instrument for collecting the data. Meanwhile, in order to find out the communication strategies used by eleventh grade students during the teaching and learning process, the data obtained from the interview sessions were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results of this research showed that there were five strategies that were used by eleventh grade students at SMK N I Lalan: (1) circumlocution strategy, (2) literal translation strategy, (3) Language switch strategy, (4) appeal for assistance strategy, and (5) mime strategy.
