Abstract
WhatsApp is one of the online media that is used to support writing process during COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to find out the students' perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities. Participants in this study were 6 students at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang taken by using purposeful sampling. This research was a case study design. The interviews were used to collect the research data. Data obtained from interviews were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings of this research revealed that there were students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in writing activities, as follows: (a) Independence of time and location in writing activities by using WhatsApp, (b) No vocabulary improvement in writing activities by using WhatsApp, (c) The technical problems in writing activities through WhatsApp, (d) No grammatical improvement in writing activities by using WhatsApp. The results showed that the use of WhatsApp in writing activities gave more negative impacts on the positif impact on the students in learning writing process.
