Abstract
This is a qualitative research with a descriptive design which aimed at investigating difficulties encountered by the students in reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. The subjects of this study were three students at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. The subjects of this study were determined by using homogeneous sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview as the instrument data collection method. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The result showed that the students faced some difficulties in reading comprehension, such as limited vocabulary, lack of background knowledge, a lack of reading motivation, difficulty to use reading strategy, lack of grammar mastery, hard to understand long sentences, ignore of concentration, house environment and school environment.
