Abstract
This research aims to provide a more in-depth picture of mothers' parenting patterns at the Palembang Foundation for the Development of Children with Disabilities, especially regarding mothers' experiences in caring for mentally retarded children. The main focus of this research is to identify mothers' experiences in facing the challenges and dynamics of caring for children with intellectual disabilities, as well as how these experiences influence the parenting patterns implemented. The subjects in this research consisted of three mothers who had mentally retarded children and attended the Palembang Foundation for the Development of Children with Disabilities. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation carried out on the three mothers. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles & Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The research results show that the experience of caring for mentally retarded children gives rise to parenting patterns that are more attentive and supervisory, where mothers face various challenges related to meeting the child's physical, emotional and social needs. The parenting style applied by these three mothers tends to lead to a democratic parenting style, where the mother gives the child freedom to express opinions, but still provides clear boundaries and pays attention to the special conditions and needs of the mentally retarded child. Factors that influence the experience of caring for children include the mother's education level, knowledge about the condition of mentally retarded children, and social support from the surrounding environment and foundations.
