Abstract

This study aimed at finding out (1) whether or not there was significant correlation between students’ English language exposure and their reading comprehension achievement, and (2) whether or not English language exposure significantly influenced students’ reading comprehension achievement. The study was a correlational study employing Pearson Product Moment and regression analysis. The population of this study was 404 students of eleventh grade students of SMA N 3 Palembang, and by using purposive sampling technique, 68 students were chosen as the sample. To collect the data and to measure students English language exposure and students’ reading comprehension achievement, an English language exposure questionnaire and a reading comprehension achievement test were given. The Pearson Product Moment correlation and regression analysis were employed by using SPSS 23. The result revealed that students had a “medium” level of English exposure and most of them were in “average” level of reading comprehension achievement. Furthermore, the correlation between English language exposure and students’ reading comprehension achievement was positive and fair correlation in which the r-obtained was greater than the value of r-table (0. 416 > 0. 2521) at the 0. 05 level (2-tailed). The value of probability (0. 01) was less than 0, 05, so, there was a significant correlation between English language exposure and the students’ reading comprehension achievement. Furthermore, from the regression analysis, it was found out that the R Square was (0. 173). It indicates that English Language Exposure significantly influenced the students’ reading comprehension achievement with 17,3 % contribution.
