Abstract

The main problem of this thesis is “Does the implementation of Content-Based Instruction (CBI) method significantly improve the students’ skill of the eighth grade students at SMP PTI Palembang in writing recount text?”. Therefore, The objective of this study is designed to improve the students’ skill of the eighth grade students in SMP PTI Palembang in writing recount text. The whole investigated objects (population) of the study were 74 students from two classes of the eight grade students at SMP PTI Palembang. The sample were conviniently taken from class VIII.1 and Class VIII.2 in the academic year of 2015/2016. An experimental design was used in this study, especially design quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test non-equivalent group designs. In finding a significant improvement on students’ achievement from pretest to posttest score, the Pairedsample t-test was used by the writer, which showed that the result of ttest (tvalue) with df = 36 is 9.995 and the level significance with specified α = 0.05 (95 % of confidence level) is 0.000. It showed that tv > tt (tvalue is higher than ttable) and the level of significance is lower than α = 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be stated that there was significant improvement in students’ writing achievement (from pretest to posttest score) of recount text after the implementation of Content-Based Instruction (CBI) method. From the result of the test, it implies that CBI method could be potential used as an alternative method in teaching English, especially in improving students skill in writing recount text.
