Abstract

Considering the importance of corrective feedback in student teachers’ speaking skill, the aims of this study were (1) to find out the type of corrective feedback employed by lecturer in speaking class, (2) to describe the errors of speaking probably produced by students frequently corrected by lecturer in speaking class, and (3) to describe student teachers’ perception on lecturer’s corrective feedback in speaking class. This study used a qualitative design. The participants of this study were the third semester student teachers of English education study program from academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected through observation and interview. Based on the analysis, it was figured out that the the lecturer mostly gave delayed corrective feedback. The types were explicit correction, recast, elicitation, repetition, and metalinguistic feedback. The lecturer’s corrective feedback focused more on pronunciation error. Whereas, student teachers perceived that the lecturer’s corrective feedback was very helpful in improving their speaking ability, all errors should be corrected, the lecturer should provide the correct form after indicating the error, explicit correction was as the best strategy, and delayed feedback was as the best timing of giving corrective feedback.
