Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety and the causes of students’ anxiety in speaking. The participants of this study was EFL students of State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang which consisted of 65 students. I used mixed method in this study. Public speaking class anxiety scale (PSCAS) was used to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety. The result showed that from 65 students in the third semester, most of them (49%) had low level of anxiety in speaking. Another findings result indicated that (47%) of the students experienced medium level and only (3%) experienced high anxiety. Meanwhile, in order to find out the factors that made students anxious in speaking, the data gained from observation and interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. It was also found that there were five factors that made students anxious in speaking: 1) lack of confidence; 2) lack of language competition; 3) lack of practice; 4) lack of preparation; 5) fear of making mistakes.
