Abstract
Self-assessment is viewed to be a promoting strategy in creating independent learners who constantly assess themselves to progress in learning. The aim of this study was to find out the students’ perceptions on the use of self-assessment in writing at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. A qualitative study with case study design was used in this study. There were four students were involved to be participants of the study and they were requested to be the interviewees. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data gained from interview. The result of this study showed that there were several aspects of students’ perception which contained benefits and barriers of self-assessment on writing. The benefits of self-assessments consisted of 1). Self-improvement, 2). Creating students’ writing competence, 3). Improving students thinking skill. While, for the barriers itself, it consisted of 1). Time consuming, 2). Dishonesty and overwhelming.
