Abstract
This research was aimed at investigating is there was any correlation between writing attitude and writing achievement of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Talang Kelapa. The writer made one hypothesis in this study, that is, the correlation between students’ writing attitude and writing achievement. The method used was descriptive quantitative method through correlation study. The data were collected by using writing attitude questionnaire by Wolcott, W and Buhr, D. (2002) which consist 30 items in lickert-scale and essay writing test by using essay writing rubric from Brown (2004). The writer used purposive sampling and there were 57 students becoming the sample at SMAN 1 Talang Kelapa in the academic year of 2016/2017. The data were obtained by means of interview, questionnaires, and test. The result showed that 75,4 % students had negative attitude and 24,5 % students had positive attitude. Besides that, the result showed 31,5 % students had very bad writing achievement, 26,3 % students had bad writing achievement, 24,5 % students had average writing achievement, and 17,5 % students had good writing achievement. Pearson product moment correlation was used to find out the correlation between writing attitude and writing achievement. The result showed that there was no significant correlation between writing attitude and writing achievement. Since the correlation coefficient or r-obtained (-.021) was lower than r-table (.2609), and p (.876) was higher than .05, it means that there was no significant correlation between writing attitude and writing achievement of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Talang Kelapa.
