Abstract
Abstract Petroleum sources in Indonesia are limited increasingly, as the using of petroleum is the main energy source. It cause of the petroleum fuel was crisis. Biodiesel is one of the renewable energy that is environmentally friendly, and promising to be a substitute for fossil fuel because it is non-toxic. This study is aimed at how the number of roots and stem catalysts affected biodiesel yield and to know the characteristics of biodiesel produced related density and viscosity. Biodiesel production is done through the transesterification reaction catalyzed by CaO, with a variation of the catalyst percent by 5%, 6% and 7% of the oil weight. The yield of biodiesel was obtained from each variation of the catalyst percent, yield 43.30%, 39.04%, 39.92%. The result of characterization related to density and viscosity is, the density value of each catalyst variation was 780 kg/m3, 760 kg/m3, 780 kg/m3 and the viscosity value of 2.4286 cSt, 2.4291 cSt and 2.4305 cSt respectively. Based on the results of the study, it can be noted that the optimum catalyst number was at a 5% catalyst percent. As for the value of density of the resulting biodiesel has not fulfilled SNI7128:2012 Biodiesel, while the viscosity value has fulfilled SNI7128:2012 Biodiesel. Keywords: Biodiesel; CaO catalyst; reed
