Abstract

The aims of the study were to find out the type of questioning strategies used by teacher on classroom interaction in teaching reading and to know the students’ perception toward the teachers’ questioning strategies on classroom interaction in teaching reading. The approach of this study was qualitative research method with a case study. The participants of this study were four students of eight grade and an English teacher at islamic junior high school Patra Mandiri Palembang. To collect the required data for this study, interview was used. The result of the study shows that three types of teacher’s questioning strategies used by teacher in teaching reading including convergent, divergent, and procedural questions. Afterward, the students more prefered convergent question (Yes/No and short answer) than divergent question that convergent question are easy to answer but they were insufficient for increasing they critical thinking.
