Abstract
The usefulness of WhatsApp became popular for students area. It facilitated students and teachers to connect between them in pandemic Covid-19. This research was conducted to find out the students’ perceptions toward WhatsApp in writing activities of eighth grade at SMP N 21 Palembang.This study used qualitative with case study design. The participants of this study were chosen by using maximum variation sampling. The interview session were recorded and transcribed by using personal calling on handphone. The data obtained from the interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The result of this study found some perceptions by the students. Four perceptions that students’ felt in learning writing through WhatsApp were found: 1)The students felt that WhatsApp was convenient to use, 2) The students felt that there was no improvement in writing ability; 3) The students felt that there was lack of teacher’s attention; and 4) The students felt that writing activity through WhatsApp was flexible.
