Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to find out the teacher's challenges in teaching speaking online at MTs Aisyiyah 1 Palembang. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research, it was employed by using a case study. The participant in this study was an English teacher using homogeneous sampling technique. The data were collected by using semi-structured interview through open-ended questions. Interview was conducted to determine the challenges faced by an English teacher in teaching speaking online and data from interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings from the research showed that the teacher faced some challenges when teaching speaking online at MTs Aisyiyah 1 Palembang, as follows: (a) lack of students’ confidence in speaking English, (b) having difficulties with the internet, (c) lack of interaction between teacher and students in online speaking class, (d) passive students in online speaking class, (e) lack of teacher’s ability in developing speaking materials for online class, (f) lack of time and, (g) lack of teaching and learning facility in the school.
