Abstract

Teachers’ Perceptions Toward The Use of WhatsApp in Reading Activities: A Case Study at SMA Negeri 1 Kayuagung ABSTRACT This study was intended to find out the teachers’ perceptions toward the use of WhatsApp in reading activities at SMA Negeri 1 Kayuagung. This study used a qualitative research with a case study to find out the teachers’ perceptions toward the use of WhatsApp in reading activities. This study was at SMA Negeri 1 Kayuagung with two of the teachers as the participant by using purposeful sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher utilized one-on-one interviews through open-ended questions to collect the data about the teachers’ perceptions toward the use of WhatsApp in reading activities at SMA Negeri 1 Kayuagung by following the aspects prepared in the interview guideline. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique. The results of this study based on interviews concluded that there were six perceptions the use of WhatsApp in reading activities, as follows: (1) promoting the students’ confidence in learning, (2) promoting the students’ learning autonomy, (3) promoting the students’ enthusiasm, (4) promoting the students' positive attitude towards reading activities, (5) promoting the effective time management, and (6) offering the possibility of plagiarism. WhatsApp are very helpful for teachers to provide information and make it very easy for students to learn in a pandemic situation like this with the features available on WhatsApp being a medium that helps teaching and learning activities and facilitates interaction with each other.
