Abstract
This article examines the role of the Musi River in the development of Islamic civilization in Palembang which is influenced by the Musi River and its tributaries. Historical studies took time during the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate to the Dutch East Indies. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The urban morphology of Palembang follows the flow of the Musi River from the mouth of the Ogan River to the mouth of the Komering River with a ribbon-like shape. Because it is very determined by the river, then when Islam develops in this area it forms a civilization according to its geographical conditions. During the Dutch East Indies, some of the legacies of this civilization were adapted to the political interests of development. Palembang's morphology turned into a "mainland city". Although not yet fully, there is an adaptation effort from the community for those changes. The morphology of the city changes, from the waterfront to waterback. The symbols of local Islam began to be replaced with colonialist symbols. In fact, the architecture of the mosque and the palace was not spared from colonialist elements. Keywords: Musi River, Islamic civilization, Palembang
