Abstract

This study aimed to find the categories of student's misbehavior and teacher's strategies in handling students' misbehavior in speaking activities at MTs Negeri 2 Bungo. This study was qualitative research with a case study as the research design. This study's participants were two English teachers taken by using a convenience sampling technique. Observations and interviews were conducted to determine the categories of students' misbehavior and the teacher's strategies in handling students' misbehavior in speaking activities, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that there were three categories of students' misbehavior in speaking activities (1) talking out of turn; (2) verbal aggression; and (3) out of seat. The second finding indicated that there were four teacher's strategies in handling students' misbehavior: (1) verbal intervention; (2) non-verbal intervention; (3) using punishment; and (4) using rewards to avoid misbehavior.
