Abstract
The objectives of the study were to explore the challenges and obstacles faced by the Syariah Supervisory Board (SSB) members and how they dealt with these challenges and obstacles in carrying out their functions in Islamic bank under study. This research was a case study by taking three participants from the SSB members of BSBS. The results of the interview revealed that the challenges faced by the SSB members were related to competence, professionalism, sharia internal auditors, independence, integrity and technology. While the obstacles faced by the SSB members were related to the application of multiple rules and the number of SSB members. The research results revealed how they overcame these challenges and obstacles. Competency challenges were faced by giving trust to each member to carry out his duties and responsibilities in accordance with his expertise. The challenge of professionalism was overcome by conducting discussions among them so that they could remind each other regarding their professionalism of. They encouraged the Board of Directors to add syariah internal auditors and provide them with additional training so that their knowledge related to syariah would increase. Overcoming the challenge of independence, they sticked to the regulations and fatwas of DSN MUI in doing their work. They worked honestly to maintain their integrity. In addition, they also increased their knowledge related to technology to anticipate technological developments. They overcame obstacles related to multiple regulations by reminding the Board of Directors to continue to carry out bank operations in accordance with applicable regulations, especially related to syariah compliance. Meanwhile, the obstacle of the number of SSB members due to the increasing bank operations was overcome by them by sending the sample file of the petition test to the BSBS head office. This research had implications for two matters. The members must communicate more intensely with the Board of Directors in order to encourage Islamic banks to immediately expand the office network to increase customer convenience in transactions.
